Cardin Discusses Ways to Energize the Rebirth of Baltimore on the Senate Floor
“The national spotlight will be leaving and we are going to need to deal with the issues that are left behind.”
“We can do this, we must do this, we must rebuild our cities.”
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) took to the floor of the United States Senate Wednesday to discuss ways to rebuild and re-energize Baltimore and other cities across America.
“The death of Freddie Gray and the events of the last few weeks have been heartbreaking. I thank my colleagues who have contacted Senator Mikulski and me offering their help and willingness to work together to deal with the issues that have been raised in Baltimore and other cities, around the country. We understand that the national spotlight will be leaving and we are going to need to deal with the issues that are left behind.
“There are two pillars for the rebuilding of Baltimore and restoring confidence. One deals with public safety and justice and the other deals with repairing the damages that were caused and dealing with the core problems that led up to the violence in Baltimore. I do believe that we in Baltimore can be a model for the country as to how we can make our community and make our nation stronger.”
In his remarks, Senator Cardin mentioned his pending legislation to end racial profiling, restore voting rights to the formerly incarcerated, as well as efforts to address racially biased sentencing practices. Senator Cardin also called for collaborative work to bolster summer programs for young people, increased public-private development projects and the extension of the New Markets Tax Credit.
