Buying Local Makes A Real Difference: Cardin Urges Marylanders to #ShopSmall on the Upcoming Small Business Saturday

November 25, 2017 Marks the 8th Annual Year Promoting Local Small Businesses
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, is again urging Marylanders to support our local economy and local entrepreneurs by setting aside time on Saturday, November 25 to #ShopSmall at local small businesses. This is the eighth year for the celebration of the local businesses that help our economy grow – and can help Americans get a jumpstart on holiday shopping. As with previous years, Senator Cardin cosponsoredbipartisan legislation recognizing the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. They support nearly half of all jobs in this country and create nearly two-thirds of the new jobs created every year,” said Senator Cardin. “Small Business Saturday is a chance for our local communities to support the businesses that support their local community all year long. Buying local makes a real difference, both for the families who own independent small businesses and for our state and local economy. With more than a half-million small businesses right here in Maryland, there’s no shortage of options, so I encourage everyone to plan on ‘shopping small’ and ‘dining small’ next weekend.”

The United States is home to more than 29 million small businesses. In total, they:

•                 Represent 99.9 percent of all firms in the U.S.;
•                 Employ more than 47 percent of employees in the private sector;
•                 Constitute 98 percent of firms exporting goods;
•                 Pay 41 percent of total private sector payroll;
•                 Generated more than 61 percent of net new jobs between 1993-2016.
