Football season is finally here.
Lanham, Md.-based DuVal High School started off the regular season with a bang after taking down Hyattsville, Md.-based Northwestern 26-12 on Sept. 2.
Tigers senior running back David Dupree had 24 carries for 183 yards and three touchdowns against the Wildcats’ defense.
Nevertheless, Wildcats senior running backs Binson Mondestin and Shaka Victor combined for 130 yards on the ground and averaged over four yards per carry, respectively. Northwestern is slated to play against Baltimore, Md.-based Patterson High School on Sept. 8.
DuVal is set to compete against Brandywine, Md.-based Gwynn Park High School on Sept. 9.
Gwynn Park vs. Potomac High School
Gwynn Park is coming off of a statement win against Oxon Hill, Md.-based Potomac High School (24-12) to earn its first win of the season. After a tightly contested battle in the first half, the Yellowjackets enjoyed a 3-0 lead in the first quarter until Potomac sophomore quarterback Dominique Anthony hit senior wide receiver Deandre Rucker for a 45-yard touchdown to go up 6-3.
However, the lead didn’t last long though as Gwynn Park rallied to score 21 points including a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior running back and safety Terrell Lindsey.
Gwynn Park senior running back Ryan Clemons led the Yellowjackets in rushing with 55 yards on five attempts, while Lindsey rushed seven times for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Wise vs. Surrattsville
Wise dismantled Surrattsville 57-0 on Sept. 2. Wise junior quarterback Quinton Williams went 5-of-7 for 94 yards and two touchdowns in his first game as a starter for the Pumas. Senior running back John Oliver rushed seven times for 33 yards and a touchdown, helping lead the team to victory. The Pumas will gear up to for a game against Calvert Hall (2-0) on Sept. 8.
Surrattsville will take on a scrappy Parkdale team that just earned its first win of the season on Sept. 1 against Fairmont Heights by the score of 28-8.
Oxon Hill vs. Riverdale Baptist
Oxon Hill is slated to play against Riverdale Baptist on Sept. 9. The Crusaders are coming off two wins against Bishop McNamara (33-6) and most recently Washington D.C.-based Ballou High School (35-9).
