Governor Larry Hogan Announces Staff Appointment
Douglass Mayer Appointed Director of Communications

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan today announced Douglass Mayer as the new director of communications, replacing Matthew Clark, who has accepted a position in the private sector. Mayer currently serves as deputy director of communications, a position he has held since the start of the Hogan administration.

“Matt has been a trusted advisor to myself, Lt. Governor Rutherford, as well as to members of my cabinet and has been an important leader on my staff during the key moments of our administration,” said Governor Hogan. “I wish him well in his future endeavors and thank him for his tireless contributions over the past 20 months. Having served as deputy director of communications, I know that Doug will make a tremendous impact on day one. He’s been an extraordinary resource from the start of my administration.”

A native of Anne Arundel County and a graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Douglass Mayer has served as deputy director of communications for Governor Larry Hogan since January 2015. Previously, he was communications director for Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina.

“I am honored by this appointment and very appreciative to Governor Hogan for this opportunity to lead his very talented communications team. I remain committed to advancing the administration’s agenda throughout the state and to all Maryland citizens,” said Mayer. “Matt has been a great colleague and friend and he’ll be missed here at the State House.”

Clark joined the Hogan administration in January 2015. Prior to his appointment, he was a managing director with FTI Consulting, a business advisory and strategy consulting firm based in Washington D.C. Following his departure from the administration, Clark will return to FTI Consulting.

“It’s been an honor to work for Governor Hogan. I am forever grateful for the chance to serve the people of my home state and to have the opportunity to contribute to a brighter future for all Marylanders, including my own family who have made their home here,” said Clark. “Governor Hogan has put together a terrific team across state government, and I am proud to have had the chance to work with so many talented professionals and dedicated public servants.”

Mayer’s appointment takes effect Tuesday, August 16th.
