The Howard Bison finished their Gotham Classic schedule with an impressive 73-60 win over South Alabama on Dec. 23 in Mobile, Ala.

After losing two of their first three Gotham Classic games, Howard outscored and better defended South Alabama en route to the double-digit win.

Howard’s best scorer, sophomore guard James Daniels III, got off to a hot start, scoring 13 first half points to steer the Bison to a 36-33 lead at halftime. Daniels kept his foot on the gas in the second half and got some help from fellow sophomore guard James Carlton, who dropped 17 second half points to boost Howard to a comfortable double-digit lead. Daniels finished with a game-high 22 points.

The Bison ruled the paint, scoring 32 points inside the box, far more than South Alabama’s 12 points in that zone. Howard also controlled the boards, recording 46 rebounds—including 23 offensive rebounds—to produce 24 second chance points.

The win improved Howard’s record to 7-7 overall. Howard faces Fordham in New York on Dec. 28, and will enjoy a break until Jan. 8, when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell.
