Senior running back Trey Samuel scored three touchdowns to lead the South Carolina State Bulldogs to a 35-14 win over the Morgan State Bears on Oct. 7 in Orangeburg, S.C.
It marked the fifth straight loss for Morgan State (0-5 overall, 0-2 against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference[MEAC]).
Morgan State actually led S.C. State, 10-7, at halftime after junior running back Eric Harrell ran in a short touchdown and sophomore kicker Luke Uransel made a 22-yard field goal. It was the first time this season where the Bears led an opponent after two quarters of play.
The Bears extended their lead 14-7 in the third quarter after forcing back-to-back safety violations on the Bulldogs’ offense.
But S.C. State (2-3 overall, 1-2 MEAC) finally cracked Morgan State’s defense, starting with a 29-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Dewann Ford to junior receiver Quan Caldwell near the end of the third quarter. The Bulldogs scored three more unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including two scores by Trey Samuel.
Samuel finished with a game-high 146 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.
Morgan State junior transfer quarterback Eli Staley completed 16 of 40 pass attempts for 156 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions. Senior running back Herb Walker Jr. led the Bears in rushing with 64 yards on 23 carries.
