Kanye West Reveals New Album Name, Claims Role as “Nucleus” of Culture

Rapper Kanye West raised eyebrows recently, revealing that his new album will be called “Yeezus” and comparing himself to a god and Steve Jobs while claiming a role as the “nucleus” of culture.

At a recent listening party for his new album, due June 18, West said the album bears the title because, “West was my slave name and Yeezus is my god name.”

In a recent extended interview with The New York Times, the outspoken artist also drew parallels between himself and late Apple founder Steve Jobs.

“I think what Kanye West is going to mean is something similar to what Steve Jobs means,” he told the Times. “I am undoubtedly, you know, Steve of Internet, downtown, fashion, culture…I honestly feel that because Steve has passed, you know, it's like when Biggie passed and Jay-Z was allowed to become Jay-Z.”

Since releasing his debut solo album in 2004, West has made headlines for a variety of incidents, including assaulting paparazzi, interrupting singer Taylor Swift during her Video Music Awards acceptance speech, and his relationship and upcoming child with celebrity Kim Kardashian. He has also released several lines of clothing and frequently worked as a producer for other artists.

His new album was largely recorded in Paris with a variety of contributors. Among the tracks on the album is “I Am a God,” produced with Rick Rubin, as well as “Black Skinheads” and “New Slaves.”

West said the provocative titles were part of his calling as an artist.

“I think that’s a responsibility that I have, to push possibilities, to show people: ‘This is the level that things could be at,’” he told the Times. “So when you get something that has the name Kanye West on it, it’s supposed to be pushing the furthest possibilities. I will be the leader of a company that ends up being worth billions of dollars, because I got the answers. I understand culture. I am the nucleus.”
