Benzino, rap music entrepreneur, CEO of Hip-Hop Weekly and star of the VH1 show “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” was shot while en route to his mother’s funeral in Duxbury, Mass. March 29, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.
The 48-year-old hip-hop artist, who was born Raymond Scott, was taken to South Shore Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Duxbury Fire Captain John Guilderson told the Boston Globe.
Plymouth police arrested Gai Scott, 36, Benzino’s nephew who, Cruz said in a statement, allegedly fired several shots from his Bentley into the red Dodge SUV Raymond Scott was driving, the Globe reported.
Benzino, of Mansfield, Mass., got out of the SUV after being struck and was picked up and driven by a passerby to the Duxbury Police Department before being transported to the hospital, according to the Associated Press.
Hip-Hop Weekly said Benzino was wounded in an arm, and his back was grazed by a bullet.
“There has been growing family tension between Raymond Scott and Gai Scott,” Cruz said, according to masslive.com. The shooting occurred as the two men, in separate cars, were on their way to the funeral 35 miles south of Boston for Mary Scott and resulted in the closing of busy Route 3 for several hours Saturday afternoon, MyFox Boston reported.
The funeral occurred after the shooting, officials at St. Peter’s Church in Duxbury, told a WCVB-TV reporter.
