Redskins Take Advantage of Wounded Raiders for Season’s First Win

The Washington Redskins picked up their first win of the season in a 24-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sept. 29 in Oakland, Calif.

The Redskins were able to take advantage of an injury-depleted Raiders’ offense that was without its starting quarterback, Terrell Pryor, a dual-threat passer with great speed and mobility. Pryor was sidelined game-day after suffering a concussion a week ago. Oakland was also without starting running back Darren McFadden, who hurt his hamstring during the game

Instead, Oakland had to lean on backup quarterback Matt Flynn, who struggled to produce much against the Redskins’ last ranked defense. Flynn tossed an 18-yard touchdown early in the game that gave Oakland a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The touchdown pass was not long after the Raiders scored the first points of the game on a blocked Redskins punt.

But those were the only positive plays Oakland would make during the rest of the game. Flynn went on to throw a pick-6 as Redskins rookie cornerback David Amerson intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a defensive touchdown in the second quarter.

Washington then scored 14 unanswered points in the second half, including a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Robert Griffin III to receiver Pierre Garcon. Griffin completed 18-of-31 passes for 227 yards, a touchdown and zero interceptions.

Running back Roy Helu also scored a touchdown for Washington on 14-yard run to pay-dirt. Helu replaced starting running back Alfred Morris, who left with an injury during the second half. Morris finished with 16 rushes for 71 yards.

Flynn finished for Oakland with 21-of-32 passes completed for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Redskins veteran linebacker London Fletcher led Washington with seven tackles.

Next-up: Washington advanced to a 1-3 overall record;. They’ll rest with a bye week during the weekend of Oct. 6 before their next action against arch rivals, the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas on Oct. 13.
