Morgan State Overcomes N.C. Central for Second Straight Win

After starting the season with a five-game losing streak, the Morgan State Bears have found a winning rhythm, earning their second straight victory after pounding the North Carolina Central Eagles, 34-22, on Oct. 19 in Durham, N.C.

The win followed a 34-21 victory over Florida A&M during Morgan State’s homecoming celebration two weeks ago on Oct. 5. This victory, however, spoiled North Carolina Central’s homecoming, as the Eagles couldn’t contain the Bears’ running attack on offense. Morgan State ran for 288 yards in the game.

The first touchdown of the game came in the first quarter from Morgan State redshirt freshman running back Lamont Brown III, followed by a second touchdown run by junior quarterback Seth Higgins.

Higgins also tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass for the third score of the game, pushing Morgan State ahead, 21-0 in the opening quarter.

The Bears scored 13 more points in the second half, including a short touchdown run by backup junior quarterback Robert Council.

Brown led the game with 98 rushing yards while Higgins followed with 55 rushing yards.
The Bears’ offensive line, led by senior center Clarence Swain, was given much of the credit for allowing the Morgan State’s running backs plenty of space to run and control the game.

"We got another win and it feels good," said Swain. "We set a goal after bye week. We have six (wins) in a row that we have to get to win a MEAC [Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference] championship. This is just step one out of six. Our saying on the offensive-line is ‘We're in starvation. We're never full.’ This was just a little bite and we're still hungry.”

Morgan State (2-5 overall record) will next face the Bison during Howard University’s homecoming on Oct. 26. in Washington, D.C.
