Baltimore’s Douglass High Moves to 8-0 with Shutout of Digital Harbor

The Frederick Douglass High School Ducks remained one of Baltimore City’s only undefeated football teams following a 24-0 shutout over Digital Harbor on Oct. 25 in Baltimore, Md.

The lopsided victory pushed Douglass’ record to 8-0 overall and 5-0 against Baltimore City Division II opponents, and also clinched a No. 1 seed in the Class 1A South Regional playoff tournament, scheduled to start in November.

It marked the second straight year and third time in five years that Douglass has clinched a Maryland playoff seed, a sharp turnaround from the days when they were consistently one of the worst teams in the city.

“We come to go to work,” Douglass linebacker Donyea Moody told reporters. “We’re trying to make it to M&T Bank Stadium [site of the Maryland state finals] and trying to make a change in the school.”

Moody played a key role in the win over Digital Harbor, the fourth shutout in five games for Douglass. With their defense clicking, it took only three scores from Douglass’ offense to earn the easy victory. Quarterback Cameron West scored the first touchdown of the game on a 45-yard pass to Teon Maeser; DaQuan Alexander and Michael Owens both had rushing touchdowns.

Douglass head coach Elwood Townsend said he was proud of how hard his team has worked this season.

“The kids have worked hard, week in and week out,” said Townsend, who took over perhaps the worst team in Baltimore when he was hired five years ago. The Ducks had just one winning season since 1990 before Townsend arrived. “It’s a good feeling to be undefeated for once and the kids are going to enjoy this.”

Douglass has just two more games left on their schedule as they attempt to finish with a perfect 10-0 record. They’ll face W.E.B. DuBois?on Nov. 1, followed by a Nov. 8 matchup against Carver Vo-Tech, in this year’s installment of a West Baltimore neighborhood rivalry classic.
