Corbin Leads Gonzaga to Homecoming Victory over McNamara

Junior running back Reginald Corbin scored four touchdowns, including back-to-back scores in the third quarter, to help the Gonzaga Eagles defeat the Bishop McNamara Mustangs, 28-13, on Oct. 26 at Buchanan Field in Washington, D.C.

Before the game, Gonzaga recognized the team’s seniors in their last home game of the regular season, which doubled as the school’s homecoming game.

With the score tied 7-7 at the start of the second quarter, McNamara began to take control of the game with a long drive. A fumble at the goal line halfway through the second quarter gave Gonzaga possession of the ball, but the Eagles couldn’t capitalize on the turnover as McNamara’s defense forced a three-and-out. Gonzaga senior defensive back Stephen Beckerle then created another turnover when he intercepted Mustangs’ quarterback Ramar Williams.

The momentum completely shifted in Gonzaga’s favor in the third quarter when the Eagles came up with another interception, followed by two rushing touchdowns from Corbin. Mustangs quarterback Ramar Williams responded with a touchdown of his own to keep McNamara in the game and make the score 21-13 at the end of the third quarter.

McNamara’s running game came alive in the fourth quarter, but Gonzaga’s defense proved to be too much for the Mustangs. Corbin rushed for his fourth touchdown, and senior defensive back Stephen Beckerle’s second interception of the day with just three minutes left to play sealed the win.

Gonzaga head coach Aaron Brady said it was an “emotional game,” and that his team didn’t play their best against the Mustangs.

“They [McNamara] did a great job,” Brady said. “They came out prepared, they had a great plan and executed it well. They got some stops on offense and put the pressure on us.”

Gonzaga remained undefeated at home and improved their record to 6-3 overall, while McNamara’s fourth-straight loss brought their overall record to 5-4.
