Washington D.C.’s Dunbar Holds On for Close Win over McKinleyTech

Freshman point guard Luther Anderson scored 22 points to help elevate the Dunbar Crimson Tide over the McKinley Tech Trainers, 76-73, in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 28.

Dunbar couldn’t seem to find its rhythm in the first quarter, and McKinley Tech took an early 10-point lead. However, midway through the second quarter, something clicked for the Crimson Tide, and they battled their way to a 31-30 lead at halftime.

“Our defense, man-to-man, wasn’t there. We weren’t rotating good. So I felt it was time to drop back and see if they could shoot the outside shot,” said Dunbar head coach Damon Singletary about the first half. “We tried to put some pressure on their guards bringing the ball up the court, as well as trap them in the corner, and it worked for us.”

Dunbar came out hot in the third quarter, attacking McKinley Tech from all angles. Senior guard Kenneth Beckham, who scored 15 points, had a key steal and assist to give the Crimson Tide a 10-point lead.

But the Trainers wouldn’t go away easily. Led by senior forward Christian Lutute, McKinley Tech responded to Dunbar by hitting jump shots, especially three-pointers; they hit seven from beyond the arc. Lutute scored a game-high 25 points.

But Dunbar’s 5-foot, 7-inch Anderson performed as if he was on fire, aggressively driving to the hoop for basket after basket, as well as a few key assists. In contrast to his aggressiveness on the court, the freshman was soft-spoken when asked about his standout performance.

“I played pretty solid,” Anderson said. “Had a couple of buckets, a couple of key possessions.”

Still, the Crimson Tide held on to get the victory. Junior wing guard Tye’Quan Gaskins had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Senior forward Petrick Brice grabbed 14 rebounds.
