Work is currently under way in 10 communities in Maryland as part of a

multi-year proactive maintenance and upgrade program to improve the

safety and reliability of the gas system

BALTIMORE, Nov. 28, 2012 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) <http://www.bge.com/Pages/default.aspx>  announced today that it continues to upgrade natural gas mains in 10 neighborhoods throughout the region and will be initiating six new projects in 2013.  The work is part of a multi-year initiative, Operation Pipeline <http://www.bge.com/operationpipeline> , to replace hundreds of miles of cast iron and bare steel gas pipes with modern pipes in dozens of communities in central Maryland.  

“Operation Pipeline is an important part of maintaining the safety and reliability of the gas system and part of our larger investment in upgrading the systems that deliver energy to our customers,” said Robert D. Biagiotti, vice president of gas distribution, BGE.“Through Operation Pipeline, we proactively address the outmoded materials on our system—cast iron and bare steel pipes— which are coming to the end of their useful service lives. We replace these pipes with new, durable gas mains that will serve customers well for decades.”

The projects are part of nearly $100 million in capital investments BGE is making to its natural gas system this year.  To date,Operation Pipeline has completed 14 upgrade projects throughout the central Maryland region, including five phases along the B&A Trail and sections of Canton, Catonsville, Gardenville, Hamilton, Old Westminster Pike, Silo Point and Woodbrook.  In 2012, BGE began new projects in Churchville, Forest Park, Pine Heights and Woodlawn, in addition to continuing work in sections of Canton, Catonsville, Hamilton, Silo Point, Westminster and Woodbrook.  BGE plans to begin six new Operation Pipeline projects in 2013 in communities across the service area to be announced in 2013.
