Baltimore Gas and Electric Company to Demolish
Decommissioned Natural Gas Storage Tank in Baltimore City
WHAT: BGE will be demolishing its decommissioned Melvale Gas Holder by means of implosion. The structure is located in Baltimore City near W. Cold Spring Lane and the Jones Falls Expressway. This steel structure was retired from use in 1997. When it was operational, the tank met customer demand for natural gas, adding gas to the area network of pipelines when demand increased and storing it when demand was lower. Upgrades to the regional natural gas system have made this facility obsolete.
WHEN: Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, as soon after 7:00 a.m. as preparations, safety of operations and traffic control will permit. If you plan to cover the event, please note that there will be road detours and closures around the safety perimeter. Please allow ample time to get to the viewing area.
WHERE: There will be a non-public viewing area for members of the media located at the parking lot of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, 1400 West Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21209 (the lot nearest the Jones Fall Expressway). There will also be restriction on air traffic of a ∏ mile radius around the implosion zone and a 1,500 foot Above Ground Limit.
NOTE: Please provide names of individuals who will be attending in advance to Rachael Lighty at Rachael.lighty@bge.com.
