BALTIMORE (Oct. 9, 2013) – Demonstrating the company’s commitment to community service, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) employees teamed up with more than 500 community volunteers from various organizations and companies to participate in the 11th Annual Ricky Myers Day of Service this past weekend. In addition, BGE presented Civic Works, Inc. with $10,000 in support of the various environmental stewardship and energy-efficiency service projects completed year-round throughout central Maryland.

Throughout the day, volunteers completed more than 20 community service projects in eight neighborhoods in Baltimore City. Some accomplishments include:

·         Planting of nearly 100 trees and more than 3,500 flower bulbs

·         Clean up and conversion of two abandoned lots into green space for school children, including an area for children to play games and an area for families to grow fresh food

·         Improvement of classrooms in two schools

·         Clean up of three public parks

·         Improvements to the Real Foods Farm, an urban farm in Baltimore City, including harvesting of fall crops and winterizing the farm

·         Home improvements for senior citizens, including installing various energy-efficiency measures

·         Restoration of the historic Clifton Mansion

Civic Works, Inc. strengthens Baltimore’s communities through education, skills development and community service. Each year, hundreds of volunteers join the Ricky Myers Day of Service to clean parks and vacant lots, plant trees, paint schools, repair homes for elderly residents, create community gardens and help communities conserve energy.

Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, BGE has played an integral role in working with Maryland communities to address economic development, public safety, civic issues and other initiatives that help enhance our neighborhoods. Through the use of shareholder dollars, BGE supports programs that deliver measurable and sustainable impact in areas of education, economic development, environment and arts and culture.

In addition, through BGE’s employee volunteer network, “Energy for the Community,” employees lend their time and passion to our corporate citizenship activities. Last year, BGE employees, friends and family spent more than 18,000 hours volunteering with more than 160 different community organizations.

BGE’s corporate citizenship aligns with that of its parent company, Exelon Corporation. As part of Exelon’s merger in March 2012, Exelon and its subsidiaries have committed to maintain charitable giving of an average of $7 million per year in Maryland, including BGE’s service area, for the next 10 years. BGE’s support of Civic Works, Inc. fulfills that commitment.
