STATEMENT BY U.S. SENATOR BENJAMIN L. CARDIN ON DEATH OF ARCHBISHOP WILLIAM D. BORDERS

“I join all Marylanders today in mourning the passing of Archbishop William Donald Borders, a religious leader who touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Archbishop Borders came to Baltimore during the crisis surrounding school busing, a very difficult time for our community. His common sense approach and steady voice calmed the atmosphere and was credited with helping to defuse tensions.

“The Archbishop was a Chaplain during World War II, seeing combat first hand in Italy and North Africa. He was an unassuming person and I was always impressed by his common touch and how he could relate to nearly everyone he met. He didn’t care about titles or position, but he had a way of making everyone feel valued and that their opinion mattered.”
