CARDIN TO JOIN MARYLAND AND PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY OFFICIALS FOR RIBBON-CUTTING OF EXPANDED HEALTH FACILITY AND NEW PRENATAL SERVICES IN CAPITOL HEIGHTS

On Monday, February 14 at 11:30am, U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin with join officials from Maryland, Prince George’s County and Dimensions Healthcare System to celebrate the start of prenatal services at the Greater Baden Walker Mill Health Center in Capitol Heights with a ribbon-cutting for their newly expanded and renovated facility. Greater Baden received $400,000 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to double the size of its facility in 2010. Greater Baden will utilize a state grant from the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission to expand access to new prenatal services for at-risk women and reduce health disparities in this underserved community

Maryland currently ranks 39th in the country in infant mortality and despite a 37% decline from 1982 to 2000, studies show virtually no change in the state’s infant mortality rates in the last decade. The infant mortality rate in Prince George’s County (11.7 deaths per 1000 births) remains well above the State’s average of 8 deaths per 1000 births. Across Maryland, the percent of women receiving prenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy has been dropping since 2000, reaching a low of 79.5% in 2007. Among White women in the state, 82% received early prenatal care, compared with 73.5% of African-American women and only 63% of Hispanic women.
