Utility recognized for its efforts to promote the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® and customer communications efforts during 2010 back-to-back blizzards
BALTIMORE, June 16, 2011 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) today announced that it has received two industry awards from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) “Best in Maryland” Awards. The awards are presented annually to public relations practitioners, who, in the judgment of their peers, have successfully addressed a communications challenge with exemplary professional skill, creativity and resourcefulness.
“BGE is committed to ensuring our customers have the tools and information they need to reduce and better manage energy usage and save money” said Robert L. Gould, vice president and chief communications officer for BGE. “We work to accomplish this through a proactive, multi-media approach to clearly and effectively communicate an increasingly complex set of messages. It is particularly important to actively communicate with customers using all available tools, including social media, before, during and after severe weather and resulting power outages. These industry awards from the Maryland PRSA affirm our customer-centric approach to communications and reinforce the positive feedback that we continue to receive from our customers.”
BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® was awarded the prestigious “Best Representation of a Theme,” for its marketing and communications strategy intended to promote customer participation in its programs that provide customers with tools to reduce energy use, save money, help with system reliability and enhance the environment.
In 2009, BGE introduced a comprehensive portfolio of energy efficiency programs, known as the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®. An integrated marketing plan helped build awareness and encouraged customer participation. Through 2010, overall energy savings of more than 550 million kilowatt hours, which is equivalent to eliminating the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of nearly 43,000 homes for one year, has been achieved. The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® supports EmPOWER Maryland’s goal of a 15 percent per capita reduction in energy consumption by 2015.
BGE also was recognized with an “Award of Excellence” for its 2010 Strategic Storm Response Plan. This comprehensive strategic plan was executed during the historic back-to-back blizzards in February 2010, which blanketed the company’s Central Maryland service area with more than 40 inches of snow over the course of five days and interrupted electric service to approximately 137,000 customers. BGE’s use of its customer call center, automated telephone system, website, social media and traditional media helped customers stay informed about restoration progress which included the resources of more than 1,400 BGE, contract and out-of-state personnel.
BGE, www.bge.com, headquartered in Baltimore, is Maryland’s largest gas and electric utility, delivering power to more than 1.2 million electric customers and more than 650,000 natural gas customers in Central Maryland.
