Lt. Governor led effort to open Maryland’s 5th hospital-based domestic violence screening program last fall at Prince George’s Hospital Center.

CHEVERLY, Md. (June 23, 2011) – TOMORROW, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will discuss the health care community’s role in responding to domestic violence at the Programs and Partnerships forum, presented by the Maryland Health Care Coalition Against Domestic Violence in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence and Prince George’s Hospital Center. The meeting is designed to build partnerships and discuss ways to expand domestic violence programs in a health care setting. Attendees will examine the responsibility of the health care community to victims of domestic violence and learn about strategies and tools for training staff and how to start a program that screens, advocates and assists victims of domestic violence.

The forum is being hosted by Prince George’s Hospital Center’s where, last October, Lt. Governor Brown announced the opening of Maryland’s 5th Hospital-Based Domestic Violence Program. The program expands on the existing sexual assault center at the hospital and was funded with a combination of public and private funds.

Since taking office, the O’Malley-Brown administration has worked to reduce violent crimes committed against women and children by 25 percent before 2012. Addressing domestic violence is a personal cause for Lt. Governor Brown. In August 2008, his cousin Cathy was murdered by her estranged boyfriend during a domestic dispute. Building on his experience as a legislator and the perspective this tragedy provided him, Brown championed successful efforts in 2009 to improve domestic violence laws and take guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. During the 2010 Legislative Session, Brown worked with the General Assembly to pass legislation allowing a victim of domestic abuse to terminate a residential lease with a copy of a final protective order.
