GOVERNOR O’MALLEY TO ADDRESS GOVERNOR’S WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD

ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 13, 2011) – TOMORROW, Governor O’Malley will address the Governor’s Workforce Investment Board (GWIB) to discuss the Administration’s ongoing efforts to create jobs and the Skills2Compete initiative. The Governor will discuss the State’s sector-based strategies in cyber-security, healthcare, and green energy jobs and also the impact of upcoming federal budget decisions on Maryland’s workforce training system.

Last year, Governor Martin O’Malley launched the Skills2Compete Maryland initiative. The GWIB, as the S2C Advisory Board, began convening State agency partners, Local Workforce Investment Boards, and the community college system to develop a plan to increase the number of Marylanders who receive at least two years post-secondary education or training leading to a degree or certificate by 20 percent by 2012. The final S2C plan was released in April 2010.

The GWIB is the Governor’s chief policy-making body for workforce development and is comprised of 45 members, a majority of whom represent the business community, as mandated by the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA). Other members include the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor, cabinet secretaries, college presidents, the State Superintendent of Schools, elected officials, labor, and representatives of non-profit organizations. The GWIB is responsible for developing policies and strategies to form a coordinated workforce system from a variety of education, and employment and training programs.
