Home Local Maryland Government Announcement Originally published January 18, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (January 18, 2012) – TOMORROW, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will join Maryland Veterans Caucus Chair Senator Douglas J.J. Peters, Senator Robert Garagiola, other members of the General Assembly, and leadership from the Health Facilities Association of Maryland (HFAM) for the announcement of a new effort to address unemployment among veterans by encouraging long-term and rehabilitative care providers to hire more veterans. To help veterans connect their training and crisis management skills with health care jobs in one of Maryland’s largest employment communities, representatives from several companies who are members of HFAM will sign a pledge to hire several hundred veterans in 2012.

HFAM is a voluntary provider community association, chartered in 1948 as the Maryland Nursing Home Association. It is the oldest and largest long-term care association representing skilled nursing, sub-acute facilities, and assisted living programs in Maryland. HFAM has nearly 222 member organizations, including non-profits, serving more than 18,000 Maryland consumers in need of long-term care each year. HFAM member organizations employ nearly 19,000 people in Maryland.

Lt. Governor Brown, a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and the nation’s highest-ranking elected official to have served a tour of duty in Iraq, leads the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s efforts to provide veterans with better services and resources. In 2010, the Lt. Governor launched the “Warrior to Worker” initiative to expand veterans’ employment opportunities within State government and to promote employment, education and training opportunities for veterans throughout Maryland. Last year, the Lt. Governor launched the Mil2FedsJobs web portal, located on the Maryland Workforce Exchange (, the first of its kind in any state to directly match transitioning service members with careers in the Federal Government.
