(Baltimore, MD) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-7), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, presented two Baltimore-area housing assistance programs with grant checks today, on behalf of NeighborWorks America.
Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore received a $252,200 grant, while St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center was granted $150,500. Both organizations are members of the national NeighborWorks network.
“NeighborWorks has fought the same battle I have, throughout so much of my time in Congress, to keep Americans in their homes,” said Cummings. “Sadly, we have seen millions of American families lose their homes – often the single largest investment that many of them will ever make. NeighborWorks, partnering with groups like Neighborhood Housing Services and St. Ambrose, is working hard to keep the American dream of homeownership alive for families in need of assistance. I commend their efforts, and I am proud to help present these funds to continue their work here in Baltimore.”
NeighborWorks America is a national public nonprofit organization established by Congress to create affordable housing and community development across the country. With its public/private model, NeighborWorks America supports partner organization efforts to revitalize and sustain their communities. In 2010, NeighborWorks America estimated that for every one dollar the organization received in federal funding, more than $29 in private funds were dedicated to improving housing conditions in America.
Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to the revitalization of Baltimore neighborhoods through homeownership opportunities. The organization specializes in foreclosure prevention, financial fitness, homebuyer education, counseling, rehab lending, mortgage refinancing and free tax preparation.
According to Dan Ellis, Executive Director of Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore, “The capital funding provided to Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore will be used in the Park Heights community. Since the inception of this program, 87 percent of program participants have been senior citizens. The program often enables recipients to remain in their homes stemming the population loss and vacancy challenges that have plagued Baltimore in recent years. Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore is grateful for the leadership provided by Congressman Cummings as we partner together for the revitalization of Baltimore.”
St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center has served 100,000 families and is Baltimore’s oldest non-profit housing provider. St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center offers free monthly workshops for first-time homebuyers and for those facing foreclosure. The workshops cover budgeting, credit, selecting a home, selecting a loan product, the home purchase process, avoiding foreclosure, and foreclosure assistance.
“St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center is very grateful for this award from NeighborWorks America,” said Brian Devlin, Director of Rental Services for St. Ambrose. “We are grateful to Congress for its foresight in providing a resource to those of us working to address our community’s needs. We are grateful to NeighborWorks for providing a standard of excellence in community development. We are grateful to Congressman Cummings for being a steadfast champion for Marylanders. Thank you for everything you do.”
Congressman Cummings is a leader in foreclosure prevention. He has been at the forefront of congressional efforts to investigate abuses by mortgage servicing companies and has worked with housing regulators to implement reforms that will help keep more Americans in their homes. On October 27, 2011, Cummings was honored as “Federal Champion of the Year” by the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition for his efforts to address the foreclosure crisis.
