LT. GOVERNOR BROWN, MDA TO HOLD COVER CROP ANNOUNCEMENT
SPARKS, Md. (August 29, 2012) – TOMORROW, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will join Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance, agricultural leaders, local farmers, and elected officials in Baltimore County to announce record cover crop program enrollment for the coming season. Tomorrow’s announcement will be made at Cold Bottom Farms, Inc., in Baltimore County. The family-owned farm has consistently been one of the biggest participants in the cover crop program and aims to plant 2,000 acres of cover crops this fall.
Maryland’s Cover Crop Program provides farmers with grants to plant cover crops on their fields immediately following the summer crop harvest. Cover crops are important to the health of the Chesapeake Bay and the productivity of Maryland’s farmland. Small grains, such as wheat, rye or barley, planted as cover crops in the fall, take up unused nutrients, control soil erosion, and protect water quality in the Bay and its tributaries.
