Governor officially launches “Jobs and Opportunity” Tour

Highlights importance of economic growth through innovation

BALTIMORE, MD (September 12, 2012) – Governor Martin O’Malley today delivered a keynote address <http://www.governor.maryland.gov/blog/?p=6684> to a sold-out audience as part of the “Leaders + Legends” lecture series at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, highlighting Maryland’s path to compete and win in the New Economy.

“There is no progress without jobs, and in this changing global economy, the states, countries – and yes companies – that succeed in leveraging innovation for job creation, opportunity and growth, will be those who succeed in making their children net winners. That’s our greatest economic challenge.”

In his address, the Governor laid out a three-part strategy for job creation, opportunity and growth:

1. Leveraging the State’s competitive assets of workforce and geography to accelerate innovation in science and security;

2. Strengthening Maryland’s workforce through public education, skills training, and more affordable college; and

3. Making the right investments and choices through a government that works.

The Governor also officially announced the start of the “Jobs and Opportunity” Tour. In the days ahead, the Governor will travel the state to demonstrate Maryland’s ability to compete and win in the New Economy, focusing on job creation, skills training, entrepreneurship and innovation.

With a highly-skilled and educated workforce, Maryland has become a hub for science, technology and discovery, and a leader in the Innovation Economy <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5se-fDRFJ1E&feature=player_embedded> . According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Maryland ranks #1 in the nation for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and remains one of the best-positioned states to grow, create jobs and prosper in the coming years. The Milken Institute ranks Maryland #1 for human capital capacity, and the Kauffman Foundation ranks Maryland #3 for the state’s ability to win in the New Economy in the 2010 State New Economy Index.
