LT. GOVERNOR BROWN TO BE HONORED FOR EFFORTS TO PROMOTE HEALTH EQUITY AT ADVENTIST HEALTHCARE’S CONFERENCE ON HEALTH DISPARITIES

GREENBELT, Md. (October 8, 2012) – TOMORROW, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will give the opening address at Adventist HealthCare’s Center on Health Disparities 6th Annual Conference: "Starting at the Top: Achieving Health Equity through Executive Leadership." Lt. Governor Brown will also be presented with the organization’s Blue Ribbon Award in recognition of his visionary leadership in promoting health equity in Maryland. Renowned Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson will be the keynote speaker for Monday’s conference, where approximately 200 national and regional health leaders will be in attendance to gain expert advice on how to successfully address and reduce health disparities in their communities. During the 2012 Legislative Session, Lt. Governor Brown designed and led passage of legislation creating the innovative Health Enterprise Zones (HEZ) program to address health disparities. The FY 2013 State budget includes $4 million for a pilot program of two to four Health Enterprise Zones throughout Maryland that will be established through a competitive application process. A series of public forums held throughout the summer were followed by a report to the General Assembly. Applications are now being accepted and the first HEZs are expected to be designated by the end of the year. For more information on the HEZ program or submit an application, please visit

Lt. Governor Brown leads the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s efforts to reduce costs, expand access, and improve the quality of care for all Marylanders. Under the leadership of Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown, Maryland has implemented reforms that have expanded health coverage to over 341,000 Marylanders, half of whom are children, established Maryland’s Health Benefit Exchange, and put the State in position to maximize the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Independent analysis by the Hilltop Institute at the University of Maryland Baltimore County has found that implementation of the ACA will benefit the state’s budget by $672 million through 2020, generate more than $3 billion in annual economic activity, cut the number of uninsured in half, and create more than 26,000 jobs.
