LT. GOVERNOR BROWN TO CELEBRATE TRANSFORMATION OF CONTAMINATED BALTIMORE WATERFRONT INTO NEW ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVE
Nature Area Will Connect Community to Recreation along Patapsco River
BALTIMORE, MD (October 23, 2012) - Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will be joined tomorrow by federal and local officials, community leaders and local school children to open the Masonville Cove nature area in Baltimore. Lt. Governor Brown also will participate in a wetlands planting with the school children.
The 11-acre nature area is part of a massive restoration project that is rebuilding one of Baltimore Harbor’s most contaminated areas. More than 60,000 tons of trash and debris dating back more than one century have been removed for this project. Invasive plants and unhealthy trees have been removed for native trees, shrubs and wetland plants. Free and open to the public, the nature area allows for passive use, including walking trails, fishing and bird-watching. A kayak and canoe pier allows for access from the Patapsco River.
