BALTIMORE, March 23, 2013 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) <http://www.bge.com/Pages/default.aspx>  today announced that it is encouraging customers to conserve energy this evening, starting at 8:30 p.m. and lasting until 9:30 p.m., in celebration of Earth Hour 2013. Created by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007, Earth Hour is celebrated across the globe as households, businesses, and landmarks symbolically switch off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change. BGE’s support of Earth Hour demonstrates the company’s commitment to protecting and preserving the environment and promoting energy efficiency.

“BGE has a longstanding commitment to protect and enhance the environment,” said Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “We proactively work to provide customers with tools like our BGE's Smart Energy Savers Program® <http://www.bgesmartenergy.com/> , to help them manage and decrease energy use, which may ultimately help reduce their energy bills and impact on the environment. By achieving a savings of more than 1.2 billion kilowatt hours a year, our customers play an important role in helping keep Maryland clean and green. We encourage our customers to show their support for our environment by switching off non-essential lights tonight during Earth Hour.”

In 2013, BGE customers reached a significant energy savings milestone of more than 1.2 billion kilowatt hours saved per year through the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program <http://www.bgesmartenergy.com/> ; equivalent to eliminating the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the electricity use of an estimated more than 126,000 homes for one year, since its launch. These annual savings make a substantial impact on the environment and the savings equate to the amount of energy needed to power all of the residential homes in Towson, Columbia and Annapolis combined for an entire year. The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program <http://www.bgesmartenergy.com/> is a suite of programs that enable all customers to control energy use, in support of EmPOWER Maryland’s goal of a 15 percent per capita reduction in energy consumption by 2015, and leading to more efficient use of electricity and lowering energy bills from where they otherwise would be. Collectively, the programs help contain the cost of energy and improve reliability. The programs also help to reduce peak demand and slow the growth in energy consumption to lessen the need for more power plants. BGE offers energy saving solutions for renters, homeowners, large and small business customers, non-profits and institutional customers.
