Prior to entering the service, LTC William L. Roberts III worked as the Assistant Correctional Facility Administrator in command of all inmate service for the Anne Arundel County Department of Detention Facilities in Annapolis, Md. and retired from law enforcement.
A native of Baltimore, Md., LTC Roberts graduated in 1979 from Towson State University with a Bachelor’s degree in sociology. He completed the U.S. Army Basic Training in 1984 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant following Officer Candidate School in 1987 where he joined the Infantry Officer Branch. He has over 27 years of Army service, both Active and Reserve.
He served three years in the enlisted ranks while assigned as a Motor Transport Operator attached to the 818th Maintenance Company, Fort Meade, Md. As a commissioned officer, his assignments include serving as a platoon leader with 1/175th 29th Infantry Division (Light); a tactical officer with the Maryland Military Academy; an executive officer with Headquarters Company 1/175th, 29th Infantry Division (Light); and company commander with both C Company 1/175th and the 2/175th. He was also an officer Candidate School instructor with the Mid-Atlantic Training Leadership Brigade and with the 1/70th Regiment (Officer Candidate School); a logistic officer and battalion commander with the HQ 70th Regiment; Personal Rep JTF 435 Bagram AF and the present Operation Deputy Branch Chief for the OARDEC, VA.
In 2004, he was mobilized to OARDEC in support of OEF where he has filled several critical positions including Case Research Officer, Designated Military Officer, QA Officer and Production Chief.
LTC Roberts’ military education includes the IOBC and AOIC, the Combined Arms Service Staff College, the Command and General Staff Officer College, the Infantry Officer Battalion and Brigade Command Course, and the Detainee Review Board, Recorder and PR Course. He has earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in 2008.
His awards and decorations include the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Ribbon, the AF Campaign Medal, the GWOT Expeditionary and Service Medals, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, the NATO-ISAF Medal, the MD Meritorious Service Medal, the MD 5-year Service Ribbon, the MD-10 year Service Ribbon, the Department of Army Staff Service Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Order of Saint Maurice-Centurion Infantry Medal.
LTC Roberts and his wife, Ersella, have twin daughters Adrienne and Jessica.
