Berthiner P. Butler, 88


Berthiner Parker was born on March 10, 1923 in Newberry County, S.C. to the late Niece and Elma Parker. After the passing of her mother, Niece married the late Estelle Parker who became not only her mother, but her best friend until her passing. Berthiner was educated in the public school system of Newberry. Berthiner began her Christian discipleship at an early age at the Elijah Methodist Church. While there she met and later married the late Eugene Butler. In 1941 they moved to Baltimore. From this union six children were born; Julia, Dorothy, Eugene (deceased), Beverly, Verna and Crystal. Berthiner later became a member of the Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church, where she served on many ministries.

Berthiner was a housewife and later was employed as a domestic worker until she retired in 1994. In her spare time she enjoyed word search puzzles, quilting, trips to Atlantic City and other casinos to play the slot machines, shopping, cooking and baking and spending time with her family and friends.

Berthiner was a member of many social and church organizations, including; The Rainbow Social Club, the Usher Board and the Jackson Circle. She had a wonderful personality, was extremely friendly and had a way of telling you exactly what you needed to hear. She had a saying or phrase for just about any situation.

On Oct. 10, after a lengthy illness Berthiner was called home to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by: Eugene Butler Jr. (son), Emma Sligh Parker (sister), James Parker (brother), Eugene Butler Sr. (husband), Quentin Butler (grandson) and Julian “June Bug” Parker;(brother).

Berthiner leaves to cherish her memory her devoted companion Horace Smith; five daughters: Julia B. Penny, Dorothy Rock, Beverly Wright, Verna B. Larry and Crystal Butler; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Ellen Smackum (Leonard), Delores Hannah (David) and Donzella Parker Bert; the niece she raised, Linda Sligh; and a host of other relatives and friends.
