Theodore Chaplin Jr., 65


Coach Theodore 'Naggatt' Chaplin Jr. (Chap), age 65, of 395 Fredrick St, Denmark, S.C., died Nov. 20 at TRMC in Orangeburg, SC.

'Chap' as he was affectionately known was born May 7, 1946 to Queenie Gadson Jenkins and Theodore 'Naggatt' Chaplin Sr. in Bluffton, S.C. Naggatt as he is known in his hometown, graduated from Michael C. Riley High School where he led the basketball team to two state championships. Chap earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Voorhees College and a master's in counseling from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C. At Voorhees College, he was named 'Most Valuable Player' of the Colleges of S.C. Tournament for three consecutive years and MVP of the Southeastern Atlantic Conference.

After a spectacular career at Voorhees College 'Chap' went on to play with the Baltimore Bullets of the NBA and later in the old ABA with the New Orleans Buccaneers. He started his coaching career as the girls’ basketball coach at CV Bing High School in Allendale, S.C. Later, he went on to become the men's basketball coach and athletic director at Denmark Technical College where he retired in 2006 after serving for 37 years. Coach Chap was honored by the South Carolina General Assembly on April 28, 1998 by the passing of bill # 5080 honoring his 500th win and a record of 500-99 along with three undefeated seasons and 28 straight winning seasons. He was a member of Rome Baptist Church in Denmark, SC where he served as an usher. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Survivors: Two daughters, Yolonda Chaplin Brown (Milton) of Douglasville, GA and Dominiqueka Parler, of Denmark, S.C.; one son, Theodore Chaplin III of Conway, S.C., one grandson, Jackson Caleb Brown of Douglasville, Ga.; one brother, William Jenkins (Mary) of Savannah, Ga.; one sister, Vivian Jenkins of Bluffton, S.C.; a host of nieces and nephews, and a special mate, Cenita Gerald of Conway, S.C. and many friends.

Services were held Nov. 26 in the Theodore Chaplin Jr. Arena/Gymnasium at Denmark Technical College. Burial was in the Bamberg County Memory Gardens, Bamberg, S.C.
