Robert Melvin Mills (Bobby), son of the late William Francis Mills Sr., and Emma Hall Mills, was born on August 16, 1931, in Washington, D.C. He departed this life on Sept. 29.
Bobby grew up and received his formative education in the public schools of Washington, D.C. He joined the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church on March 16, 1967, by experience of grace under the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. Jerry A. Moore, Jr.
Bobby developed a passion early in his youth for automobile mechanics and found joy in tinkering with his cars and electronic gadgets. He later partnered and operated a TV-Repair business for many years. In 1977, he began a government career with the Central Intelligence Agency. He retired in May 1994, after sixteen years of service and relocated to Hampton, Va.
Bobby was united in matrimony to Audrey Johnson on Aug. 3, 1968. They shared 43 years of marital bliss. From this union a daughter, Sabrina Lisa, was born. From a previous marriage, Ione, Angelia, Deborah, and Irving were born.
Bobby had many hobbies; he was a licensed Amateur Ham Operator (W3BHB), loved fishing and when his children were younger, often took them on fishing trips. He loved automobiles and later in life he found that the Mercedes Benz was one that he would master mechanically. He was also a handyman who could fix anything. He loved to cook. His specialities were his ‘famous’ rolls, caramel, chocolate, and coconut cakes. Bobby also traveled extensively to Philippines, Japan, the Middle East, Africa and Europe, often bringing his family souvenirs and pictures.
We will certainly miss his ‘wisdom’, his culinary skills and most of all his presence.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Audrey; daughters Ione B. Armstrong (Terry), Angelia, Deborah, and Sabrina L. Mills; son, Irving F. Mills; granddaughters, Monique Armstrong and Vania Mays (Jarvis); great-granddaughters, Jasmine, Janiya, and Jade Mays; sisters, Lorraine M. Jennings, Rosemary M. Massey (Thomas), Sadie B. Mills, and Ellen M. Lewis; aunts, Doris and Francis Liggins; a host of nieces, nephews, and many other devoted relatives and friends. Three brothers, William F. Mills Jr. (1983), Henry Hardee Mills (2001), and Donald Edwards Mills (2011) and sister Betsy Mills McRae (1991) pre-deceased him.
