Howard C. Ury was born and raised in Washington, D.C. along with his younger sister, Venessa. He was the only son of Howard N. and Ruth Wilkins Ury, who both preceded him in death.
Howard attended D.C. public schools (Charles Young ES, Kelly Miller JHS, and Joel Elias Spingarn HS) from 1944-1955. Later on , Howard also attended Federal City College in 1970. Howard received Jesus Christ at an early age, being baptized at Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington, D.C.
Beginning in 1955, Howard served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force (two enlistments), the U.S. Army, and also the D.C. National Guard. He was honorably discharged from each, with his military career ending in 1964.
Following his military service, Howard began a career in the Federal Government at the General Services Administration (GSA) in 1966 as a U.S. Special Police Officer and firefighter, and later as a fire inspector from 1967-1972.
Howard became an Officer of the Federal Protective Service and upon graduating from the Officers’ Basic Training Program in 1973, was assigned to the Pentagon. While at the Pentagon, Howard received numerous awards and commendations for his knowledge, expertise and professionalism. He was noted in particular for his photographic memory and for his ability to recognize and address all of the top Pentagon officials by name. Howard retired in 1993, after a total of 37 years of faithful service to the U.S. Government.
Howard was known for his meticulous attention to his appearance, and his collections-especially his massive movie collection. He also enjoyed the tropical fish he kept in his aquarium. Before his health began to define, Howard was an active member of Victory Lodge No. 23 of the Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliated.
Howard is survived by four children; his son, Howard, and daughters, Candace, Danyale and Ericka; five grandchildren; Justin and Jordan Walker, Jy-rel Washington, Chaz Simpkins and Noah White; his sister, Venessa B. Davis; nephew, Avery Davis; aunt, Eartie Jones; his long-time partner, Anna Johnson, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
