Edward M. Winslow, Jr., “Eddie Moe,” Owner and Operator of Providence Opticians, dies at 72 (D.C.)

Edward Murphy Winslow, Jr. made his transition on Wednesday, November 28, 2012. He was born in Wise County, Virginia and was raised in Washington, DC.

As a youngster he sold Ebony and Jet magazines and the Afro American newspaper within his neighborhood. With the dawning of the Civil Rights era, he was allowed to serve as a paperboy for the Washington Post, delivering newspapers to Capitol Hill residents. These formative years, nurtured his entrepreneurial spirit and his innate drive for independence and individuality. This was also the beginning of his development as a business man and community advocate.

He attended DC Public Schools and was a 1958 graduate of Dunbar High School. He enrolled in college, but when the opportunity became available, he entered a training program for opticians with Sterling Optical, Washington, DC. It was from this training and several years of employment with Sterling Optical that he obtained the skills and knowledge necessary to become a gifted optician and a respected entrepreneur. In 1979, he entered into business with his friend, Robert Mitchell, and formed Providence Opticians. Their first business site was located in the Providence Hospital Professional Building. In later years, Ed branched out to other locations in the city. Currently, Providence Opticians has two locations within the U Street Corridor and Brookland sections of the city. Since his retirement, this business has become a family operation managed by his children, Tuesday and Kyle Winslow.

Mr. Winslow, affectionately known as “Eddie Moe”, is survived by his two children, Tuesday and Kyle; grandson, Joshua; loving partner, Susan Miller; sister, Sharon L. Winslow; brother, Robert S. Winslow; several nieces, nephews, and other close family members, friends and associates.
