Maryland’s Health Insurance Info Centers Serving Thousands Amid Technical Glitches


Hundreds of thousands of Maryland residents have sought out information about new health insurance options since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” last month, the state reported.

Since the act went into effect on Oct. 1, more than 360,000 unique visitors have logged onto http://www.marylandhealthconnection.gov/, and 44,000 others have called the state’s call centers, according to a release from the organization. As of Oct. 31, more than 4,600 Maryland households have enrolled for financial assistance.

The state claimed that more than 87,000 residents would have access to affordable coverage next year, including more than 82,000 who signed up to be automatically enrolled in Medicare on Jan. 1.

The interest comes amid continuing problems with the Maryland Health Connection web site, including limited server capacity and occasional crashing, said the agency’s executive director, Rebecca Pearce.

“Maryland Health Connection’s purpose is to help Marylanders obtain quality, affordable health insurance,” Peace said in a statement. “While we have been pleased with the interest in Maryland Health Connection, we have not been satisfied with the performance of Maryland’s health insurance website, or with the pace of improvements to the site since it launched on Oct. 1.”

In response, Pearce the state’s primary contractor for the site, Noridian Healthcare Solutions, planned to bring additional resources to bear to attempt to stabilize the web site and improve the user experience.
