Prince George’s County, Md. Council Member Karen Toles Honored by Medical Community

The Greater Baden Medical Services recently honored Prince George’s County Council Member Karen R. Toles (D) at their 41st Anniversary Celebration Gala.

Toles was recognized at the Oct. 22 gala, which bore the theme “Our Home is Your Medical Home, Mi Casa Su Casa” held at Camelot by Martins in Upper Marlboro, Md. The health provider honored Toles for her contributions to improve the outcomes for patients who seek community health care.

“I am very humbled by this recognition from Greater Baden,” Toles said in a press release. “As a Federally Qualified Health Center, Greater Baden offers the residents of Prince George’s County access to affordable, high quality, health care, regardless of income or ability to pay. I am grateful for their collaborative efforts in District 7, and their continuing commitment to bringing healthy lifestyle awareness and preventative care resources directly to our neighborhoods.”

Greater Baden Medical Services, Inc. was founded in 1972 to provide primary care services to Prince George’s County residents. It is a community-based health provider committed to delivering high-quality health care services. A volunteer board of directors, a majority of whom are users of clinic services, governs the organization.

Area residents can receive services if they are insured or uninsured, making Greater Baden the only safety net provider in Southern Maryland. The group works with residents to improve their health regardless of culture, language, or education. All of the staff, including the doctors, have attended cultural competency training at least twice per year for the past three years.

The organization has received recognition from various federal agencies for providing quality health care and support services, especially those related to language interpretation and cultural awareness.

Greater Baden Medical Services has operating health centers in Prince George’s County, Charles County and St. Mary’s County. Greater Baden also operates two facilities, Capitol Heights I and II, in Council District 7, with additional locations in Oxon Hill, Suitland, and Brandywine.

“We are pleased to have committed champions like Council Member Toles and all of our honorees who support Greater Baden's mission,” Greater Baden Medical Services, Inc. CEO Colenthia Malloy said in a press release.

The gala’s other honorees included Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, Charles County Commission President Candice Kelly, First Baptist Church of Glenarden Pastor John Jenkins, Kaiser Permanente Director of Safety Net Partnerships Mindy Rubin, and Baden Board Member Wendell Lee.
