Greater Washington Urban League to Host 15th Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament

(Updated 9/23/2013) After 120 years of service, the Greater Washington Urban League (GWUL) is set to host their 15th Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament and recognize the AFRO-American Newspaper for its excellence in covering the community and continuing the legacy of former sportswriter Sam Lacy.

On Sept. 24 at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville, Md. the GWUL along with Lt. Gov Anthony Brown as Honorary Chair and Television Journalist Roland Martin as Celebrity Chair will take a swing to help raise funds for the important and vital services provided for Washington Metro area residents in need.

In the past, the golf tournament has honored individuals and sportswriters who exemplify the legacy of Sam Lacy, the legendary AFRO-American Newspapers Sports Editor.

Organizers said all money raised at the golf tournament will go toward funding Greater Washington Urban League programs. Last year 90 golfers participated.

“GWUL has been on the cutting edge in terms of providing viable programs and services each year to 65,000 constituents in metropolitan Washington,” said GWUL Board Chair Jerry A. Moore III.

An awards banquet, which has attracted nearly 120 guests, will also be held to honor those who provided service to the league and the community. The banquet will also include an auction.

Other sponsors of the event include Broughton Construction, DC 09, MedStar Family Choice, Nuclear Energy Institute, Pepco and RLJ Lodging.
