On October 3, The So Others Might Eat organization (SOME) presented a mural in honor of Mayor Vincent C. Gray in gratitude for his support of additions to FY13 and FY14 Budgets that will help thousands of District residents to improve their lives.
Youth residing in SOME’s affordable housing worked with artist, Kyle Holbrook, Executive Director of Moving Lives of Kids Community Mural Project to create a mural symbolizing the significant role affordable housing plays in strengthening all aspects of family life. The mural highlights health, employment, education and the reuniting of loved ones.
SOME was already providing over 200 units of affordable housing in 2005 when it determined that D.C.’s lack of affordable housing was the most significant challenge facing the city’s low income and homeless residents. SOME set a goal of creating 1,000 new units of affordable housing and launched its Affordable Housing Development Initiative, chaired by William Conway of the Carlyle Group. Since the beginning of the new initiative, SOME has opened 415 additional units of affordable housing for families and single adults, including the elderly.
Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Kyle Holbrook, Executive Director of Moving Lives of Kids Community Mural Project and Fr. John Adams, President of SOME were in attendance.
