Kweisi Mfume Elected Chairman of Morgan’s Board of Regents

Morgan State University’s board of regents elected Kweisi Mfume, former National Association for the Advancement of Colored People president and former Maryland congressman, chairman of the board of regents May 7.

In a 14-0 vote with one abstention, Mfume was voted to the position of chairman, which was vacated in February 2013 after then-chairman Dallas R. Evans was ousted. Evans’ dismissal came after a board rift following Evans’ push for the dismissal of MSU President Dr. David Wilson.

“This is a great opportunity to help in the governance of a great university,” Mfume told the AFRO. “I thank the members of the board for their vote of confidence and I look forward to serving with President Dr. David Wilson.”

Along with voting Mfume as the new chairman, the board also voted on a new contract for Wilson as president of Morgan until June 2014. After 2014, Mfume said, Wilson will no longer have to rely on the board for contract renewal.

“We hope [Wilson] will be around for many more years to come,” said Mfume.

The board also voted to create the Global School of Journalism and Communications, establish a 16th doctoral program at the university and named Glenn George to be student regent for the 2013-2014 school year.

A Morgan alumnus, Mfume was first appointed to the board of regents under then-Gov. William Donald Schaefer. He was named alumnus of the year by the Morgan State University Alumni Association and holds an honorary doctorate from the university. Mfume will begin his term as chairman on of the board on July 1.

Mfume said his vision for the university is a push for competiveness amongst its students in the rapidly changing technology market. He said the board is united with the alumni, students and the greater Baltimore community to ensure success in the global economy.
