Small Business: Say Yes to the Dress–Baltimore Style


No doubt thousands upon thousands of Americans will be tuning in to the February return of TLC’s hit show, Say Yes to the Dress.

The show, which began following brides as they choose gowns out of New York City’s Klienfeld Bridal, now also has a popular Atlanta addition.

But when it comes to Charm City, some brides looking to purchase a dress for the big day are looking no further than The Bridal Suite this wedding season.

Aside from its onsite supply of gowns, the Federal Hill-based boutique also offers vintage redesign and customized dresses.

“A wedding is a milestone within a family that is never forgotten,” Fair told the AFRO. “To be a small part of that process is both an honor and a privilege.”

“To find the perfect wedding dress you must first have a vision or a theme for the entire ceremony. A bride should know how they want to feel: beautiful, sexy, like a princess.”

“The gown you select should embody the experience you are trying to create.”

Fair said that she likes to remind brides that everyone won’t always like what you love, especially when it comes down to the many opinions bound to be vocalized with any wedding dress.

“Just like choosing your mate, you should be comfortable, confident, and follow your heart,” said the 32-year-old, who got an early start when it came to design and style.

The Coppin State University graduate began a small business in the fifth grade making bedazzled t-shirts for women with a friend.

“For me it’s second nature to style women. I’m creative and driven and I despise micromanaging so being an entrepreneur was inevitable.”

“I’m all about the happily- ever-after,” she said. “I want my brides to captivate both her husband to be and the guests. My wish is to ignite a desire in women to be married. Not to look good at the celebration, but to want the family structure synonymous with marriage.”

To stay current, Fair said that on a daily basis she researches trends on the wedding scene.

Fair opened her boutique complete with jewelry and wedding planning services last November, a time she said is during the slowest period for sales related to weddings.

“Now that spring is approaching, business has definitely increased so much that I have hired help.”

When it comes to entrepreneurs “stay organized, spend wisely, and be prepared to work non-stop.”

“Even on your days off you may be compelled to work.”
