Raven-Symone has come a long way from her childhood days on American television screens.
The former Disney Channel actress set social media ablaze on Aug. 2 with a tweet that finally settled questions about her sexual preference.
“I can finally get married. Yay government! So proud of you,” said the 27-year-old star, known for her time on “The Cosby Show”, where she played a granddaughter in the Huxtable family, led by Bill Cosby.
Some fans responded by using the hashtag “#childhoodruined,” which is often reserved to gather statuses about information that seems to skew previous belief in a person, place, or thing the tweeter idolized as a child, such as the tooth fairy.
“Raven-Symone is a lesbian,” said Cristin Jones, one fan who used the hashtag in an update.
Raven-Symone’s tweet, which drew worldwide interest, derailed perceptions of the childhood star for some fans, while others seemed either encouraged or unaffected by the announcement which confirmed a months-old rumor.
“My childhood remains intact,” said one fan, Maddie Catanzaro, whose tweet got a personal response from Raven-Symone on Aug. 3.
“It’s based on her good acting skills…not sexuality,” said Catanzaro, before sending congratulations. “Possible homophobia aside, the actor and character are two different people.”
Born Raven-Symone Christina Pearman, the Atlanta native has spent her life in show business. Whether she was “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” or appearing on “Dr. Dolittle,” the award-winning actress, executive producer, and certified platinum singer-songwriter has excelled.
She came of age in front of the camera, succeeding with hit shows such as Disney’s “That’s So Raven” and the franchise opportunities that came along with a movie about four inner-city youths that become “The Cheetah Girls.”
Raven-Symone appears to be taking both the praise and heat for her decision in stride.
“In times of need, people who love you will bring smiles,” she tweeted one day after coming out. “People who love the thought of you will bring judgment.”
