It has been more than three years since the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was enacted into law, yet health care experts say many Americans remain unsure about how the law impacts their lives.
As part of its ongoing effort to clear up that confusion, the AARP this month launched a suite of new resources for persons seeking information, including a new online tool called Health Law Answers.
The new tool seeks to educate Americans about the health care law and what it means for insured and uninsured individuals and families using simple, clear-language.
Using HealthLawAnswers.org, consumers can get customized information based on where they live, gender, their family size, income and insurance status.
Answering just seven simple questions generates a report about what benefits may be available and where to find more information. That report can be downloaded, e-mailed or saved, making it easy to share information with others.
The tool is also available in Spanish – MiLeyDeSalud.org, and reports can easily be translated between the English and Spanish.
"We know there is a lot of information out there about the health care law and AARP is here to help people cut through the clutter," said Nicole Duritz, vice president of health education and outreach for AARP. "That's why we created HealthLawAnswers.org. Now in a few easy steps anyone can get a free, customized report connecting them to local resources and information that matters to individuals and their families."
For example, if someone is currently without health coverage the tool will let them know how the health insurance marketplace will work, provide resources about things to consider when shopping for coverage and then connect the individual with the health insurance marketplace in their state.
In addition to HealthLawAnswers.org, AARP created an information-rich website called HealthLawFacts.org for consumers to quickly find resources and more detailed information on specific aspects of the law.
AARP is also engaged in on-the-ground efforts to educate consumers about the law, including collaborating with a number of organizations to reach people where they live, including outreach in Hispanic communities with the Hispanic Federation, National Council of La Raza, Esperanza and the League of United Latin American Citizens.
"Americans are looking for answers and information that matters to them and AARP is here to help," concluded Duritz.
