Seniors Answer the Call to Help

All Shades of Pink (ASOP) partnered with the Maryland – National Capital Parks & Planning Commission, November 2012, regarding its Wrapped in Comfort Blanket program.  ASOP provided instruction to senior participants at area Senior Activity Centers throughout Prince George's County. Participants learned how to create signature comfort blankets for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Executive Director Denice Whalen-White, and several volunteer staff each week visited seven centers to explain the comfort blanket program and demonstrate how to make the blankets.

The project was well received from the centers' seniors and ASOP enjoyed working with beginners and advanced crocheters in how the signature blankets were to be created. Nearly half the seniors had never crocheted before but had always wanted to learn. Some were quite familiar with crocheting as well as creating granny square blankets. Participants learned that for the ASOP pattern, they simply had to create one giant granny square in the method provided, as opposed to the traditional small squares sewn together.

As the project was launched at the centers at the beginning of the winter holidays in 2012 the completion of blankets was very slow. However, once Christmas passed the blankets began to roll in on a regular basis and participants were asking to make more than one at a time. With a gang buster response that began in January and ended in June, the seniors produced a total of 402 comfort blankets.

In relation to the size of the centers and their senior population the end production was amazing. The contributions by centers were as follows:

With no two blankets looking exactly alike, each is as unique as the individual who will receive one. These blankets will be distributed to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients in Prince George's County and surrounding partner hospitals. All Shades of Pink will return to the centers beginning September and anticipate the response will be even greater in the next fiscal year.
