Landover Woman Arrested for Alleged Attempted Murder of Lover’s Son

According to Prince George’s County law enforcement officials, the plot went something like this: woman gets angry at boyfriend, woman breaks into boyfriend’s home and tries to kill boyfriend’s sleeping child as revenge.

Helen Marie Newsome, 26, of the 7200 block of E. Inwood Street in Landover, was held in Prince George’s County jail this week on an attempted first-degree murder charge in connection with an incident that occurred on Aug. 31, according to a Prince George’s County police statement.

Police patrol officers were called to the 6700 block of Munsey Street in Landover about 8 a.m. When they arrived, they were told that Newsome had broken into the home and walked into a bedroom where a young boy was sleeping. Newsome was accused of then taking a pillow and placing it over the boy’s face, before striking him on the head with a weapon.

Though he was injured, the little boy was somehow able to escape and run outside. He sought help from a neighbor, who called police. The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment of head injuries. He was later released.

Police said Newsome had previously been involved with the boy’s father. She was arrested at her home later the same morning. Police said Newsome admitted that she had attacked the child.

She was held held on a $500,000 bond, police said.
