Coppin State’s Season Ends in 4-1 Loss to Bethune-Cookman

Bethune-Cookman pitchers Ali Simpson and PJ Biocic combined to limit the Coppin State Eagles to four hits in a 4-1 victory over the Eagles on May 18 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament at Marty Miller Field on the campus of Norfolk State.

Simpson, a senior, started the game for the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats and allowed four hits and one run in five innings to earn the victory. Biocic, a sophomore, pitched the final four innings, and did not allow a hit while striking out six batters.

Coppin State ended its season with an 18-33 record, the most victories in a season for the school since 2005, when the team won 21 games. The Eagles also won two games in the MEAC Tournament for the first time since that same year.

Sophomore David Hamlett went 1-for-4 and drove in a run to lead the Coppin State offensive attack. Freshmen Dalton Cozart and Jack Kraft and sophomore Daniel McCrea also had hits for the Eagles.

Bethune-Cookman jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings before Coppin State got on the board in the top of the third inning. Junior Chris Kashangaki drew a one-out walk to start the rally and advanced to third base when Cozart followed with a single.

Hamlett then reached on an RBI fielder's choice with Cozart being forced out at second, but Kashangaki came in to score to trim the lead to 3-1. The Wildcats answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 4-1.

Simpson and Biocic combined to keep the Eagles off the board over the final six innings as they allowed just a single to McCrea in the fourth inning and a double to Hamlett in the fifth inning.
