The Morgan State Bears men’s basketball team picked up a pair of much-needed wins as they edged Liberty, 67-62, on Nov. 30 to end a three-game losing slump, and defeated Virginia Military Institute (VMI), 81-80, in overtime on Dec. 1
Morgan (3-3) had lost to Old Dominion, Holy Cross and University of South Carolina following the Thanksgiving holidays, but nevertheless found ways to get back-to-back wins on the road.
Against VMI, the Bears overcame a 13-point deficit early in the second half, tying the game with nine minutes left before giving up their own six-point cushion with less than four minutes left to play.
In overtime, red-shirt junior Ian Chiles sank the game-winning hook shot when, with just over two seconds left on the clock, junior forward Thair Health inbounded the ball the length of the court to the 7-foot, 2-inch center.
The Bears were led in the game by sophomore forward Shaquille Duncan, who totaled a career-high 17 points and 14 rebounds. Junior forward Anthony Hubbard also posted a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The night before, Morgan’s win over Big South Conference foe Liberty helped sparked the young winning streak.
The Bears controlled most of the second half against Liberty as they went on an 11-2 run after halftime, then a 9-1 run to close out the game.
Morgan State was led by Hubbard, who scored 16 points, followed by junior center Ian Chiles with 12 points. Bears junior guard Justin Black also had an impressive night as he almost recorded a triple-double, finishing with nine points, nine assists and 12 rebounds.
Morgan State will take a two-week winter break before facing Illinois State on Dec. 17.
