Freshman Jack Kraft and sophomore David Hamlett each drove in two runs to back a solid start from freshman Shane Davies and lead the Coppin State Eagles to a 7-3 victory over North Carolina A&T in the second round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament May 16 at Marty Miller Field.

Kraft had a two-run single and Hamlett also drove in a run during the Eagles’ five-run fifth inning, erasing a 2-0 deficit and propelling Coppin to its second-straight victory in the tournament.

The win marks the first time Coppin State (18-31) has won two games in the MEAC Tournament since the 2005 season. They upset defending MEAC champions Bethune Cookman Wildcats in the first round on May 15.

The Eagles remain in the winner's bracket and will face Savannah State, the top seed from the Southern Division, on May 18.

North Carolina A&T scored runs in the top of the second inning and top of the third inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead, before Coppin State responded with a five-run fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Freshman Nathan Pitts hit a one-out triple to get the Coppin State rally started. The Eagles then loaded the bases with one out when freshman Colin Dower reached on an error and junior Chris Kashangaki was hit by a pitch.

Coppin State scored its first run of the game when sophomore Mike Wright reached on an RBI fielder’s choice, which brought home Pitts to cut the lead to 2-1. Hamlett tied the score at 2-2 when he singled to left, which brought home Dower with the tying run.

Junior Chris Godfrey loaded the bases when he followed with a single and Kraft then gave the Eagles the 4-2 lead with a single that scored Wright and Hamlett.

Coppin State extended the lead to 5-2 when sophomore Alex Brown reached on an infield single that scored Godfrey. North Carolina A&T countered with a run in the top of the sixth inning to trim the lead to 5-3, but Coppin State scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to extend the lead.
