Howard Dominates Morehouse in Third Annual Nation’s Football Classic

Howard junior quarterback Greg McGhee threw three touchdowns as the Bison beat Morehouse College, 27-16, in the third annual AT&T Nation’s Football Classic on Sept. 7 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

The first two installments of the Nation’s Classic were close contests between Howard and Morehouse, but this year Howard dominated Morehouse for nearly the entire game.

Howard claimed a 20-3 halftime lead after McGhee tossed two touchdowns in the second quarter, the first a 20-yard pass to freshman running back Anthony Philyaw and the second a 27-yard strike to sophomore receiver Matthew Colvin with 1:58 left in the second quarter. McGhee’s third touchdown came with 7:44 left in the third quarter on a 26-yard pass to junior receiver Rodney Tyson.

McGhee was named the game’s MVP after completing 21 of 27 passes for 242 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions; he also rushed for 55 yards. Sophomore running back William Parker ran for a team-high 60 yards on 17 carries.

Morehouse tried to climb back in the game in the fourth quarter, scoring a touchdown on a nine-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Joshua Harris, and another on a short run by redshirt junior running back Shelton Hamilton. The two scores cut Howard's lead to 11 points midway through the final quarter but the Bison defense held, stymying the comeback effort.

Game Notes:
The game's organizer, Events DC, offered a Fan Festival with free entry from 11 a.m. up to kickoff time at 3:30 p.m. The festival featured a concert from star R&B singer and Washington, D.C. native Raheem Devaughn outside RFK Stadium.

More than 17,000 people attended the concert and game.
