Bowie State Homecoming Spoiled by Loss to Chowan University

Junior running back DaSean Martin scored three touchdowns as North Carolina’s Chowan University came back from a 14-point deficit to ruin Bowie State University’s homecoming with a 31-21 road win on Oct. 12 in Bowie, Md.

Bowie State jumped out to an early 14-0 lead after junior running back Kendall Jefferson scored on two touchdown runs in the first quarter. But Martin scored a rushing touchdown in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-7 by halftime; Martin then ran for another touchdown in the third quarter to tie the game.

Bowie State took the lead again when senior quarterback Jared Johnston tossed a 57-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Nyme Manns. But Chowan re-tied the score with a short touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Dain McFarland to senior receiver Robert Holland.

Chowan was able to take their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter with another touchdown pass from McFarland, this time caught by Martin. Chowan then extended their lead to 10 points with a field goal converted with only two minutes left in the game.

Martin led all rushers with 102 yards on 22 carries, while Bowie State’s junior running back Keith Brown followed with 101 yards on 21 carries. Johnston completed 17-of-28 passes for 246 yards, a touchdown but also threw two costly interceptions. Chowan’s McFarland also threw two interceptions along with his two touchdown passes; he finished with just 135 yards passing.
