Senior forward Kelsey Evans scored a game-high 19 points, and sophomore guard Zora Stephenson and senior guard Ali Ford each scored 14 points to lead host Elon past Morgan State, 74-54, in a non-conference game on Dec. 13 at Alumni Gym in Elon, N.C.
Elon (4-4 overall) improved to 2-0 all-time against Morgan State with the win, while the Lady Bears fell to 0-4 on the road this season. The loss also was the 10th straight road defeat for Morgan State dating back to last season.
Morgan State (4-6 overall) jumped out to a 13-3 advantage with the help of back-to-back three-pointers from junior guard Whitney Southerland.
But Elon responded with a 12-4 run to take its first lead of the game at 18-17, following two free throws by freshman guard Lauren Hudson with 10:57 left in the first half.
Sophomore guard Tracey Carrington scored four straight for Morgan State, as the Lady Bears reclaimed the lead at 21-18. Carrington then added another free throw after a 4-0 streak by Elon, evening the score at 22 all with six minutes remaining.
Those were the last points of the half for Morgan State, as Elon held the guests scoreless for the final six minutes and take a 26-22 lead at the break.
MSU senior guard Bianca Jarrett scored six consecutive points to kick off an 8-0 run by Morgan State, and bring the Lady Bears within three with 9:14 to play. It was a 54-49 game after a jumper by sophomore forward/center Amarah Williams with 6:58 remaining in the game, before but Elon held Morgan scoreless for over six minutes again while going on a 20-0 run.
The Lady Bears finally ended the drought on a layup by Carrington with 36 seconds left, and Southerland added a three-pointer to close out the scoring.
Morgan State entered the game off a 10-day layoff, and was led by Jarrett, who scored a team-high 15 points, while Carrington finished with 13 points. Southerland added 12 points.
The Lady Bears recorded 15 steals in the game, as Jarrett led the way with a game-high of five. Senior guard Moneshia Davis finished with three steals, giving her 139 for her career and moving her into ninth all-time at Morgan State.
Elon held a slim 42-40 rebounding advantage over Morgan State with freshman guard Jessica Farmer coming off the bench to grab a game-high 10 boards to go with her 10 points for a double-double. Davis led Morgan State with eight rebounds.
Morgan State continues its three-game road swing when they travel to Bronx, N.Y. to take on Fordham on Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. The Lady Bears close out their road trip with a match-up against Southeast Conference (SEC) newcomer Missouri in Columbia, Mo. on Dec. 18. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
